Jesus had a gift for taking everyday situations and using them to illustrate eternal truths. Not much has changed since then. Every day you and I encounter situations that point us back to biblical truth; if we'll just take the time to pay attention. That's what The Good News of the Day is all about; helping you notice how everyday circumstances illustrate the good news of the Bible. You may be surprised at the ways God will speak to us through the ordinary events of everyday life. The Good News of the Day; eternal truths from everyday life.

Ecclesiastes 2:10-11 I denied myself nothing my eyes desired; I refused my heart no pleasure. My heart took delight in all my work, and this was the reward for all my labor. Yet when I surveyed all that my hands had done and what I had toiled to achieve, everything was meaningless, a chasing after the wind; nothing was gained under the sun. In the new movie Dinner for Schmucks, one of the characters asks Steve Carell if hes ever spent a year living among goats as one of them (dont ask, its a long story). When Carell says no, he says thats surprising but goes on to point out that the thing about goats is the eat whatever it is theyre hungry for, no matter what that may be. They indulge in their every desire, and its possible that they might even eat themselves if they felt like it. This man then goes on to say in sad voice; Im just a goat whos slowly devouring himself. The statement was made with such emptiness, such despair, such hopelessness that despite its ridiculous sound, I found to be quite profound. We live in a society that encourages us to indulge in our every desire. No matter what it is we want, no matter what we hunger for, were told not to deny ourselves but to feed our every desire. What we arent told, however, is eventually that we lead us to consume ourselves; it will lead to our own destruction. In light of that fact, the Bibles called to live a self-disciplined, set-apart or holy life doesnt look like such a kill joy; in fact it looks like good news. The Bibles instructions on how to live doesnt make life less fun, it makes it more so. It helps us experience life to the full, while the worlds call to complete self-indulgence leads only to emptiness, discontentment, and death. Hmmm. Maybe Solomon knew what he was talking about after all.

Proverbs 19:21 Many are the plans in a man's heart, but it is the LORD's purpose that prevails. One of the new features in this years version of the venerable video game Madden NFL is a system called game planning and game flow. Before you play any games, you pick the plays you want run in various situations such as first and long, second and short, inside the redzone, on the goal line and so forth. Then, during the game, plays are called into you by the offensive or defensive coordinator and its up to you to execute that play successfully. Not only does it take the game one step closer to what its like to be in the real NFL, it also reminded me of my relationship with God. He has the game plan, hes calling the plays, and its up to me to execute those plans successfully, and when I try to call an audible and do things my own way, things usually dont go all that well. Some wont like having the AI calling the plays for them in the game, just as some dont like God calling the shots in real life. However, if we can learn to trust the one who has the bigger picture, the one who sees far more than we do, we can be sure that even when it feels like were losing yards and are taking a beating, our God loves us and has the plan to lead us to victory. I dont know about you, but I think thats pretty good news.

Philippians 2:3 Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves. Like it or not, we all have superiority complexes. That means we have a desire, nay, a need, a compulsion to be superior. We must find someone, somewhere whom we can feel superior to. Thats why we make fun of others, to feel superior. Its why we compare ourselves to others, to feel superior. Its even why sometimes we put ourselves down and try to get everyone to notice how miserable we are, because then everyones attention is on us and we feel superior. Ive often felt that the Bibles dictate to think of others more highly than ourselves is one of the most counter-intuitive instructions in the scriptures. Then a thought occurred to me; compared to God, Im completely inferior. In fact, compared to God, were all completely inferior. One mite of dust may be better than another, but to the duster it all looks the same. So are we in comparison to an almighty, powerful, holy God. Our sin makes us all the same; none really any better than the other. Fortunately for us, God loves us. He sent his Son to save us from sin, to make us more than what we are. He doesnt view us as inferior, though we are in the extreme compared to him, but rather as extremely valuable and precious. In light of that truth, there is no longer any room for our superiority complex, which is definitely good news.

John 10:28 I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one can snatch them out of my hand. I received some shocking news the other day. A man who used to work with my dad as a fellow Chaplain in the Air Force died recently. Apparently after leaving the Chaplaincy, his temper would often get the better of him which sadly would lead to abusive situations which led to a confrontation with the police during which he was killed. Its shocking enough to hear someone died that way, but even more so to think he used to be a man who would preach on Sunday mornings. Of course in situations like this the question comes up of what happens to him in eternity. Was he still saved despite the sad turn his life took, or did he loose that salvation as he continued to make poor choices? I dont have the answer to that. In truth, only God can really answer that. I do know this, however. God promises that once he gets a hold of our lives he wont ever let go; he will never give up on us even when we give up on ourselves. Gods love us is just too big. I also know that if this man is in heaven, then he is at peace. There is no more rage and no more anger, no more guilt and no more torment. There is only perfect peace, joy, forgiveness and contentment in the presence of a loving God who never lets go. Personally, I believe we cant lose our salvation and I believe this man is in heaven; which in the midst of such a tragedy, would be very good news indeed.

John 10:14 "I am the good shepherd; I know my sheep and my sheep know me I have a confession to make, but its probably one you can all identify with; I have trouble remembering names. Sometimes I can be introduced to someone and by the time were finished shaking hands Ive already forgotten their name. Awful, isnt it? Well, Im working on that, learning some new techniques to improve my memory to make sure I dont forget anyones name because few things make people feel quite as special as hearing you say their name. Were all a bit self-centered, and we have a greater fondness for those who call us by name rather than those who simply say heydude. The good news is God never forgets a name. He knows every person on the planet by name, all six billion plus of them. That means he knows your name. But not only does he know your name, he also knows every detail about you from the number of hairs on your head to whats going to happen to you. Remembering someones name shows personal interest, so Im not sure how people can say God isnt personal when he knows not only our name but everything about us. Remembering that God cares that much about me always brings a little good news into my day.
